How to build a Pokémon Champions team: from first core to test log
A competitive Pokémon Champions team is a connected system, not six individually strong profiles. It needs a clear way to win, enough positioning and Speed control to reach that position, and defensive routes that do not collapse when the opponent changes form or field. This guide begins with a simple core, then develops a Regulation M-B Double Battle structure with explicit roles, a Mega plan, weather and terrain branches, measurable tests, and a record of why each slot exists.

1. Define how the team is supposed to win
A clear win condition turns six choices into one coherent plan.
Write one sentence that describes the position you want to create: establish Speed control and let a heavy attacker take two knockouts, maintain rain long enough for a fast Water attacker to close, or trade resources until a protected cleaner is uncontested. The sentence should describe actions, not only a favorite Pokémon.
Add a secondary route immediately. If the first sentence fails when one Pokémon is removed, weather is replaced, or Trick Room is denied, the team is too brittle. A secondary route can use the same core, but it must win through a different resource or action order.

2. Choose a core before choosing six slots
Two or three connected pieces are easier to evaluate than a completed list.
Select the main beneficiary of your plan, the piece that enables it, and—if needed—the piece that covers the most obvious response. Ask what each one forces the opponent to do. A core is useful when its members create safer actions for one another rather than merely sharing a theme.
Use the Regulation M-B Pokédex to filter legal candidates by typing, roles, base stats, abilities, and defensive profile. A filter discovers options; it does not prove synergy. Keep only candidates that can name a turn or board state in which they improve the plan.

3. Assign board jobs, not generic roles
Every slot should have observable actions that justify its place.
An attacker may be a lead breaker, a midgame pivot, or a protected closer; those are different jobs. Likewise, two support Pokémon may overlap completely if both provide the same Speed control but neither creates safe switches or protects the damage source.
Write a primary job and one secondary job for each slot. If three slots have the same primary job, check whether the redundancy is intentional. If a critical job belongs to only one fragile slot, create a backup route.

4. Audit offensive coverage without chasing every type
Coverage is valuable when the team can deliver it into relevant targets.
List the defensive profiles that resist or ignore your main same-type attacks, then identify which teammate pressures those answers. Do not fill moves simply to hit all eighteen types super effectively. A neutral, accurate, well-supported move can be more useful than narrow coverage that never fits the set or board plan.
Separate type-chart breadth from real offensive output. Stats, move power, accuracy, abilities, items, spread penalties, priority, and target access decide whether theoretical coverage becomes pressure. The type ranking guide is a discovery tool, not an instruction to force a particular typing onto the team.

5. Audit defensive overlap and switching routes
Shared weaknesses matter most when the same attack reaches several slots without a safe reply.
Count which attack types hit multiple team members, but do not stop at the count. Mark the available resistances, immunities, faster threats, Intimidate-style mitigation, Protect turns, and pivots. A team can accept a shared weakness when it controls target access; it cannot accept one merely because the type summary looks balanced elsewhere.
Run the audit twice: once with base forms and once with the Mega form you actually expect to use. If the transformation changes typing or Ability, the team's safe switches and field matchups may change with it.

6. Build Speed, field, and mode branches together
Weather, terrain, Trick Room, and Speed control define distinct operating modes.
A team does not need every form of Speed control, but it needs a plan for the orders it expects to face. Define the natural order, the order after your own control, and the order under the opponent's control. Then connect each mode to a pair of Pokémon that can exploit it.
Weather and terrain are board resources, not decorative themes. Entry abilities may establish them before the first turn choices, and a Mega Ability may replace them during a turn. Record which moves, abilities, and survival thresholds depend on each field state.

7. Worked example: develop a rain core without locking every slot
A core becomes a team when it gains alternate routes and explicit jobs.
Consider a starting idea built around Pelipper, Archaludon, and Basculegion. The names suggest rain pressure, but the useful work is to define what each slot does, which board states it creates, and what the next three slots must repair.

8. Choose the Mega slot and final members by problem solved
A Mega should change a matchup or mode intentionally, not consume the slot by default.
Write the Mega form's before-and-after state: typing, Ability, final stats, Speed tier, field effect, and target matchups. Then state why that transformation is worth the opportunity cost. If the team carries multiple Mega options, define which matchup or four-Pokémon selection calls for each one.
Use the final slots to solve documented problems from the audits. One may add a second Speed mode, another a defensive pivot or opposing-field answer. Avoid adding a generally strong Pokémon without naming the exact branch it improves and the branch it makes worse.

10. Final checklist and limitations
Freeze a draft only when every slot has a reason and a next test.
A finished draft is ready for testing, not permanently solved. Save the version, matchup hypothesis, observed failure, and single change. Over several sessions, this produces evidence about the team instead of a memory of wins and losses without context.
Static Pokédex, type, role, and score data cannot select the best six Pokémon automatically. It does not know your exact moves, investment, decisions, or opponent distribution. Use the tools to find structure and contradictions; use engine-resolved calculations and representative battles to validate them.
